Rendezvous in Backyard Romances with Katzú Oso's "Amantes"

We can’t help but stan Katzù Oso, an irrepressibly talented LA musician whose work has blended themes, genres and styles together in a harmoniously captivating way. On his latest single "Amantes" off his upcoming recently announced album La Conexión, that mystic of neighborhood rhythms and backyard romances is readily apparent, a heart fluxing tune that has a fragrance you can hear. Wanting to dig into the this renaissance man’s talents and loves, we reached out to dig into his latest single, upcoming album and more:

OnesToWatch: Who is Katzù Oso?

Katzù Oso: This project is the part of me that turns love, loss, and longing into sound. It’s not just a project, it’s a way of giving voice to feelings I grew up not seeing represented in people who look like me.

What is "La Conexión" all about?

"La Conexion" are moments suspended in time captured through the lens of my 35mm camera, turned into 35min of music. Moments in my life about longing, love, loss, and hope.

How does your photography differ from music?

They’re two different languages telling the same story. With my camera, I capture emotions and life as I see them in the moment. With my music, I’m embraced by those emotions and pushed to think beyond a single frame.

Any collaborations or features? Who produced the album?

I had so many of my close friends help out on this record. Shout out to Gil, Rudy, Ernie, Javier, and Esteban! I produced the whole album with my good friend Dave Weingarten who also mixed the record.

How do you feel your sound has evolved or changed since your first album?

This album forced me to stop overthinking and just surrender to the music. Each song pulled me somewhere new, and I let it. I grew up surrounded by so many different sounds—cumbias, ballads, pop, folk, ska, indie—that boxing myself into one genre never felt honest. These songs are a reflection of that messy, beautiful mix that shaped me.

What's something you wish you knew earlier in your career?

I wish I knew earlier that overthinking kills creativity. I used to second-guess every lyric and sound, but the best songs come when you just follow the emotion. And on a practical level? I wish someone told me to buy more hard drives! you don’t know heartbreak until you lose your demos.

Besides this excellent album what else should we be on the lookout for?

I'm already working on the project after this one. Im also headlining The Paramount in LA on Nov 8, and hitting the road! Can’t wait to play these songs in different cities.

What's inspiring you right now outside of music?

I would have to say street photography, people-watching, and old family photos/stories. There’s something about connecting with where I come from that keeps inspiring the art I make today

Best place in LA to east / drink and listen to album?

I would have to say Checker Hall in Highland park, they have great food/drinks and the ambiance is always nice.

Musically who is new but making all the right moves? Who are your current OnesToWatch?

I've been into a folk mood recently so I would have to say artists like Lou Hazel, Ryman, Jackson Lundy, Cameron Winter, and Hazel English.
