Few artists are able to maintain the attention of their audience solely through the power of their vocals. Christian Alejandro, going by the moniker Ordinary Child, is a newcomer to the pop scene, but he seems to have accomplished just that. With only a handful of tracks to his name, the Arizona artist's first track of 2020, "Someday," makes him sound like a seasoned veteran.

For those unfamiliar with the atmospheric work of Ordinary Child, previous tracks "Float On" and "Diana" serve as perfect introductory points. They showcase his ability to create ethereal and dreamlike pop ballads, nostalgic and meditative. Ordinary Child builds upon the ideas of these singles in the more polished and emotive "Someday."

Ordinary Child reinvents his past ideas to make "Someday" his strongest single to date. The instrumental is minimalistic, shifting the attention of the audience onto Ordinary Child's performance. The beat is led by a soft piano melody that is complemented by synths that later come into focus during the chorus.

Ordinary Child also experiments with vocal pitching throughout the track in order to provide another dynamic dimension to the haunting meditation. His vocals are mostly reminiscent of enigmatic superstar Frank Ocean while never feeling like a cheap carbon copy.  

"Someday" shows a vulnerable side of Ordinary Child with its heart-piercing lyrics. He sings of longing and reflects on the circumstances that are causing him to be seperated from a loved one, a sentiment that hits all the harder given present-day circumstances.  

Artists such as Ordinary Child are building upon the foundation of modern pop and R&B to create elegant and introspective music that hangs in the air long after the slow fade to black. With his vocal and writing ability on clear display, Ordinary Child's debut EP, set to release later this year, is definitely a project to anticipate.
