Audrey Hobert Rolls a Strike with “Bowling alley”

Audrey Hobert’s latest single, “Bowling alley,” is a clever, self-aware, and irresistibly catchy anthem about, as Hobert herself puts it, “thinking nobody wants you to go to their party even though you were cordially invited.” In true Audrey fashion, the song is packed with lines so relatable they’re laugh-out-loud funny, making “Bowling alley” just as fun to listen to as it is to dance to.

First performed during her sold-out debut solo shows at the Slipper Room in New York City, “Bowling alley” is emotionally multifaceted. It simultaneously captures the universal anxiety of showing up to a party while exploring the frustrating feeling of being overlooked until you do something “cool” and suddenly everyone remembers you exist.

Audrey’s blunt honesty about her many contradictory feelings shines through her sharp, clever songwriting. Meanwhile, the music video, also directed by Hobert, brings her words to life and underlines the ironic, sometimes self-involved, emotions she’s unafraid to call herself out on. Audrey knows she has always been cool, so she leaves the party annoyed and dreaming of her nightgown, but then she gets home and admits it’s kind of nice to be noticed.

Audrey claims that if “Bowling alley” were just a random story she heard on the radio one day, she would know exactly what that felt like, and so do we. Relatability is, in many ways, Hobert’s greatest strength, and it goes far beyond her music. Her ability to stay true to herself is a rarity, making her a true breath of fresh air in the world of pop music that everyone can see themselves in.

Following Audrey’s massive hit of a debut single, “Sue Me,” “Bowling Alley” had big shoes to fill; however, it somehow does that and more, truly showing off just what kind of a hit-maker Audrey is.
